In an age of Whisky start-ups, Ardbeg is refreshing blast from the past. They have been making Malt Whisky on the same site since 1798. The product was so popular that they ramped up production to commercial levels in 1815. That’s more than two-hundred years of Single Malt wonder. Like nearly all of her Islay sisters, Ardbeg is a peated dram. But Ardbeg is known for gentle smoky smoothness with the vast majority of production going into the greatest blended Scotches. But true Single Malt releases are in high demand and they consistently deliver.
Ardbeg has not released a new, permanent age-stated Spirit in more than twenty years. That makes Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19 Year Old 2019 Edition unique enough — but it gets better. It will always be nineteen years-old, but each year the release will be a little bit different with varying casks, malting, and peat level. The cool thing is that each edition will have a little code stamped into the box and labels so that you can go to the Ardbeg website and get the pedigree of the bottle in your hands. For the 2019 inaugural release, the Spirit has been aged in a combination of ex-Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks. It’s non-chill filtered and bottled at a perfectly lovely 46.2% ABV.
The name “Traigh Bhan” comes from a local sandy beach near Port Ellen known as “The Singing Sands.”
